I am Pochacco, and I am always ready to go. Whether it is a morning run, a game of soccer, or a spontaneous adventure to somewhere I have never been — I am in. I live with my owner, a boy named Katsuki, who shares my energy for life and my love of staying active. My birthday is February 29, which only comes around every four years, so I make every single day count. I was created by Sanrio designer Minoru Onoue and debuted in August 1989. My name comes from the Japanese word pocha pocha, meaning chubby and cute — which I choose to take as a compliment. In 1991, I got my signature striped shirt, and my sporty side became official. I have ranked in the top three of Sanrio's annual character popularity poll in 2020, 2021, 2024, and 2025 — proof that nice and athletic is a very powerful combination. Designer: Minoru Onoue

Minoru Onoue studied Graphic Design at Tama Art University, graduating in 1978, and joined Sanrio as a character designer shortly thereafter. His most celebrated creation, Pochacco, debuted in August 1989 as a sporty, energetic alternative to Sanrio's typically gentle kawaii characters. The character's name derives from the Japanese onomatopoeia pocha pocha, meaning chubby and cute. Onoue designed Pochacco following Sanrio's loss of rights to the Peanuts/Snoopy franchise, with a brief to create a similarly lovable dog character with a distinct Japanese identity. Onoue made several key design decisions, including adding a striped shirt to the character in 1991 to amplify Pochacco's sporty personality. He also designed Goropikadon and Picke Bicke for Sanrio before leaving the company to work as a freelance designer, including a period with Hallmark around 2008. Pochacco's popularity has experienced significant revivals, ranking in the top three of Sanrio's annual character popularity polls in 2020, 2021, 2024, and 2025, confirming the design's enduring appeal across generations of collectors.
