About Miffy
I am Miffy — a small white rabbit born on a beach in the Netherlands in 1955. Dick Bruna drew me for his son, just two years old, who kept pointing at a rabbit hopping through the dunes outside their vacation house. I started as a sketch on the back of an envelope. I became something else entirely.
Bruna built me from the Dutch De Stijl tradition — bold outlines, six flat colors, nothing decorative. My face has no nose. My mouth is a small crossed line. My eyes are two dots. And yet, in more than 50 countries and across 85 picture books translated into 50 languages, children have always known exactly how I feel.
Over 85 million copies of my books have been sold. The Dutch city of Utrecht named a street crossing the miffy crossing and placed a statue of me at the central museum. After Bruna passed in 2017, the rights remained with Mercis bv — the company he founded — to ensure I stayed exactly as he intended: simple, honest, and quietly joyful.
In recent years I have appeared in blind box collectibles and designer toy collaborations, bringing the same minimalist warmth into the hands of collectors who first met me in picture books and never quite let go.
Designer
Dick Bruna (1927–2017) was a Dutch author, illustrator, and graphic designer who created over 200 children's books during his lifetime. His most iconic creation, Miffy — known as Nijntje in Dutch — debuted in 1955 and became a beloved global character recognized across generations. Bruna's approach was shaped by the Dutch De Stijl movement, combining bold outlines, primary colors, and geometric simplicity to speak directly to young audiences worldwide.
