About Care Bears

Care Bears is a classic American toy and character franchise created in 1981 by illustrator Elena Kucharik for American Greetings. Elena Kucharik was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kent State University and joined American Greetings as an illustrator in 1965. In 1981, Kucharik was commissioned to paint a series of colorful, emotion-driven bears for greeting cards. Her ten original paintings — each bear defined by a unique color and a distinctive belly badge representing a specific emotion or virtue — became the artistic and conceptual foundation of the entire Care Bears franchise. Kenner Toys transformed these greeting card illustrations into plush toys in 1983, launching one of the most commercially successful toy lines in history. The franchise generated over $2 billion in merchandise revenue in its first five years. Kucharik served as the primary Care Bears illustrator throughout the 1980s, creating hundreds of full-color images for greeting cards, books, and licensed products. The characters she designed have since appeared in multiple animated television series, feature films, and ongoing revivals spanning four decades. Current toy rights are held by Basic Fun. Kucharik's work represents a defining contribution to American toy and character design culture of the late twentieth century.
