I am Barbie. Ruth Handler created me in 1959, named me after her daughter, and gave me a career before most people thought that was something a doll should have. I have been an astronaut, a surgeon, a president, a paleontologist, an architect, and a fashion designer. I have been blonde and brunette and every color in between. I have lived in a Dreamhouse and driven a pink car and done it all in heels. Over sixty years later, a film with Margot Robbie reminded the whole world why I exist: not to be perfect, but to show that you can be anything. Designer

Ruth Handler (1916–2002) was an American businesswoman and co-founder of Mattel, Inc. Inspired by watching her daughter Barbara play with paper dolls and imagine adult roles for them, she developed the concept of a three-dimensional adult fashion doll. Barbie — named after her daughter — was introduced at the American International Toy Fair on March 9, 1959, and became the best-selling fashion doll in history. Handler's insight that children wanted to project themselves into the future through their toys transformed the global toy industry.
