Designer Yoshiharu Washino · Japan

I am Monchhichi — a small plush monkey with round eyes, a soft body, and a thumb pressed gently to my lips. Yoshiharu Washino designed me in 1974 for Sekiguchi, and from the moment I arrived, something about that pose — quiet, self-soothing, just a little dreamy — connected with people in a way no one fully expected. In Japan I was a comfort toy. In 1980, Mattel licensed me for the United States and I became a Saturday morning cartoon character, a shelf staple, and a piece of childhood that an entire generation still remembers by feel more than by name. My name comes from the French mon — mine — and the Japanese chichi, an affectionate syllable that sounds like something a child might say. I was always meant to belong to someone. Over fifty years have passed since Washino first drew me. Sekiguchi still produces me in Ome, a small city in the mountains west of Tokyo, using the same handcraft plush techniques the company has refined across its seventy-year history. In 2024 I turned fifty, and collectors around the world marked the anniversary with limited edition releases that brought me back to the shelves as both a nostalgic object and a new discovery. Today I appear in blind box series and collectible collaborations — still round, still quiet, still pressing my thumb to my lips.
