I'm Sonny Angel — a tiny naked baby angel with a thing for hats. Not just any hats. Animal ears, fruit crowns, seasonal headgear — I've worn them all, and somehow each one feels exactly right. Toru Soeya brought me into the world on May 15, 2004, in Tokyo. He said he wanted to create something healing, something that could sit on your desk and make a hard day feel a little softer. I think that's what I do. I've traveled to over 33 countries, come in more than 1,300 varieties, and found a home on shelves, windowsills, and dashboards everywhere. I don't say much. I don't need to. I just show up, wide-eyed and quiet, and somehow that's enough.

Designer: Toru Soeya
Toru Soeya is a Japanese entrepreneur and toy creator, best known as the founder and CEO of Dreams Inc., a Tokyo-based designer collectible company he established in 1996. Before venturing into the toy industry, Soeya worked at a book planning firm and a toy sales agency, gaining insight into both consumer culture and product design. Inspired by the iconic Kewpie doll aesthetic and a desire to create "healing" objects for adults, he developed Sonny Angel — a cherubic, naked baby-angel figure with interchangeable animal and seasonal headgear — which launched on May 15, 2004. The brand name itself derives from Soeya's personal nickname, "Sonny." Originally conceived to comfort stressed working women during Japan's economic downturn, Sonny Angel grew into a global phenomenon, now sold in over 33 countries with more than 1,300 figure variants produced and over 20 million units sold by 2019. Under Soeya's leadership, Dreams Inc. also launched Smiski, a glow-in-the-dark companion line. A 2023 TikTok surge brought Sonny Angel to a new generation of Western collectors, cementing its status as one of the most beloved blind box brands in the world.
