Über Minions
The Minions are small, yellow, cylindrical creatures who have existed since the beginning of time, evolving from single-celled organisms into beings whose sole purpose is to serve the most despicable master they can find. Created by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, the Minions first appeared in Despicable Me (2010) and quickly became a global cultural phenomenon. Speaking a gibberish language called "Minionese" — a blend of Spanish, French, English, Italian, and Japanese — they are defined by their childlike enthusiasm, goggle-wearing appearance, and insatiable appetite for bananas.
The Minions became so popular they earned their own franchise films: Minions (2015) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022), as well as leading roles across all Despicable Me sequels. With the franchise generating over $6 billion globally, the Minions have become one of the most licensed characters in animation history, appearing in blind box collectibles, plush toys, apparel, and theme park attractions worldwide.
Designer
Pierre Coffin is a French-American animator and film director who co-directed Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013) with Chris Renaud for Illumination Entertainment. He is the creator and sole voice actor of the Minions — the small, yellow, cylindrical creatures who became one of the most recognisable characters in modern animation. Coffin's background in character animation and his instinct for physical comedy shaped the Minions' distinctive babbling language and anarchic energy. The Minions franchise has since generated billions in box office revenue worldwide.
