Designer: Ub Iwerks

Ub Iwerks was born on March 24, 1901, in Kansas City, Missouri, and died on July 7, 1971, in Burbank, California. He met Walt Disney in 1919 at the Pesman-Rubin Commercial Art Studio in Kansas City, where the two young illustrators struck up a friendship and collaboration that would reshape American entertainment. Together, they taught themselves animation and co-founded early studios including the short-lived Laugh-O-Gram Films. When Disney's Oswald the Lucky Rabbit character was lost to a studio rival in 1928, Iwerks — the only Disney associate who refused to defect — stepped in to solve the crisis. He drew Mickey Mouse from scratch, reportedly producing a record 700 drawings per day to complete the debut short Steamboat Willie on time. While Walt Disney conceived the character's personality and provided his voice, Iwerks designed the visual form — the round ears, the simple expressive face, and the rubber-hose body that made Mickey instantly recognizable. Iwerks also designed Minnie Mouse, Horace Horsecollar, Clarabelle Cow, and Pete. After a brief departure in 1930 to run an independent studio, he returned to Disney in 1940, spending the rest of his career as a technical innovator in optical effects and special effects — work recognized with two Academy Awards for technical achievement. He is officially recognized as a Disney Legend.
